How to Watch Hulu in Canada (July 2021)

With great shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and Catch-22 available on it, we’re not surprised that Canucks would like to get on to the Hulu platform.

Unfortunately, Hulu is primarily an American service and is geo-restricted to the US. What that means is that if you attempt to watch Hulu in Canada, you will not be able to access it.

The website will let you browse the content it has to offer, but attempting to watch it will give you the following message:

“Hulu isn’t available to watch in your location”

Don’t worry though, because there’s a way around this. If you want to watch Hulu in Canada or anywhere outside the US, you will need a good VPN. Surfshark is our top choice.

I was able to unblock Hulu by connecting to Surfshark VPNs Bend, Latham, and Detroit servers, and I was given access.

How to Watch Hulu in Canada

Hulu is only available in the US and for that purpose alone, you will need a VPN to unblock it in Canada. You can follow this quick guide to unblock Hulu:

Step 1: Subscribe to your VPN of choice (Surfshark in our #1 choice)

Step 2: Download and Install the VPN app

Step 3: Open the app and enter your login details

Step 4: Connect to a US server (e.g Bend, Latham, or Detroit)

Step 5: Open Hulu, log in to your account, and enjoy!

Note 1: You may now have access to US Hulu, but Canada payment details may not be able to renew or register for a subscription. So you will need to buy a Hulu gift card and redeem it from here.

Note 2: If you do manage to register a new account, you get a Hulu free trial that lasts 30 days. This can also be used with the usual VPN money-back guarantee to test out the setup.

What to Watch on Hulu?

There are a lot of options available once you’ve got yourself access to the service, and you might not know where to begin, or know what warrants your attention.

Here are some of our personal recommendations to give you some direction as you go on your binging adventure.

Interested in dystopian science fiction? Check out The Handmaid’s Tale, an adaptation of a classic novel presenting a future where the US treats women as state property.

Want satirical comedy? Catch-22, another adaptation, starring George Clooney, is sure to satisfy with its dark humor based around the second world war.

Another work of satire, Sorry to Bother You is a rollercoaster of criticism, comedy and surreal visuals.

Looking for action? Mission Impossible: Fallout, the fifth in the series, is sure to get your heart racing with its amazing practical stunts and set pieces.

In the mood for a thriller? Look no further than the mainstream hit, A Quiet Place, an apocalyptic tale following a family attempting to survive a world overtaken by monsters.

If you’re more concerned about Hulu Live TV, you can check out any of your favorite cable networks like ABC, CBS, and FOX.

The VPNs We Recommend for Watching Hulu

We’ve tested multiple different VPNs with Hulu, and we’ve found that Surfshark works best with the platform, which is why we used and referenced it throughout this article.

Surfshark is currently offering the cheapest subscription plan amongst all the premium VPNs on this list, offering 2 years for just $2.49/mo.

With a single subscription to this VPN, you can access it across an unlimited number of devices, from your home computer to your laptop.

With over 500 servers spanning over 20 cities across the US, you’ll always be sure you can access Hulu. And you also get access to over 3,200 servers across 63 different countries.

With Surfshark, I was able to stream ‘Happiest Season’ on Hulu outside of the US:

This VPN also features a camouflage mode, disguising you from your internet provider, and a white-lister, allowing you to select which programs can connect to the internet without the VPN.

If you’re not convinced that Surfshark is the best option for you, have a look at some of our other recommendations.

Just as with Surfshark, NordVPN also has a special deal on offer for their 2-year plan at a slightly higher price of $3.71/mo.

Though it may be pricier, it has a much larger number of US servers, making up 1947 out of a total of 5402 servers across 59 countries, which can be accessed on 6 devices simultaneously.

This means that no matter how many servers fail or get blocked by Hulu, you will always be able to access the platform because of the sheer number of them.

NordVPN’s double-protection feature allows you to change your IP address twice for added protection, and its CyberSec feature prevents access to known malicious websites and adware.

NordVPN, as with most of the other VPNs we’ve recommended, offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to test the service out before you commit.

Offering a 1-year plan worth $8.32/month, provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee, ExpressVPN is a great option for those who want a short commitment for cheap.

This provider has over 3,000 servers across 94 countries, with 22 locations in the US.

ExpressVPN also boasts an in-built speed test feature, giving you direct information about which server is best for your Hulu experience.

CyberGhost is a relatively simple VPN and offers an 18-month subscription plan worth $2.75/mo.

This VPN also offers a 45-day money-back guarantee, 50% longer than any other premium VPN. If you aren’t sure if VPNs are for you, this is one of the better options for testing it out.

CyberGhost provides a clean, easily accessible UI; offers protection from the dangers of the internet; and also contains a kill-switch, preventing potential harm in case the VPN disconnects.

Most importantly, CyberGhost has servers specifically meant for streaming, so you’re always watching Hulu as it was meant to be watched.

IPVanish also makes it on our list of best VPNs to unblock Hulu and it offers a decent 1-year plan at $6.49/month, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What we think really sets it apart from the competition is the 250GBs of cloud storage at SugarSync that it provides at no extra cost, secured with IPVanish’s encryption.

With this subscription, you get access to 1500+ servers across 75+ locations. 793 of these servers are American and will let you connect to Hulu in Canada without a problem.

Why Use a Premium VPN with Hulu?

We’ve already touched upon geo-restrictions, but we haven’t explained why it exists. Essentially, certain publishing companies own the rights to certain media.

Without the proper licensing from these companies that primarily provide entertainment in certain regions, service providers will not be able to offer certain content on their platform.

There is also the issue of attaining rights to operate in certain regions under their laws. All of these things contribute to companies just not offering their services in these regions.

Hence, the need for a VPN. What is a VPN exactly?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) uses special private servers to mimic a private network, this allows you to disguise your IP address, which is how your location is identified.

When you connect to a US server in a VPN, Hulu will assume you’re accessing it from within the US, so it allows you to access its content.

The private servers that are used require money to maintain, so a VPN that markets itself as free is obviously very suspicious. There needs to be a source of revenue to keep things going.

Such free VPNs normally have limited server options, or are riddled with malware and adware, so a safe and more reliable option is a premium paid-for VPN.

The VPNs we recommend have been tested and are known to work with Hulu, while some other highly-rated premium VPNs may not because Hulu specifically blocks them.
